I am usually a big opponent of tagging people. However, when someone as cool as Mark Waltz tags you, you can’t help but to oblige.

First, let’s answer one question. Why is Mark Waltz cool? Mark is a pastor at Granger Community Church, and he and I have occasionally kept in touch over the last year and a half or so, after I attended one of their workshops last May. Although I’ve never met the guy face to face, one can tell he’s an authentic guy. He says people matter - and he means it. I love hearing about how his family’s doing…and those are the people who matter most.

On to the questions…

* One book that changed your life: The Barbarian Way - Erwin McManus. I realized I am, in fact, crazy. But that it’s okay. In fact, if you’re not…something might be wrong.

* One book that you’ve read more than once:
In Cold Blood - Truman Capote. My senior-year English teacher Mr. Bennett had a theory that Truman Capote wrote To Kill a Mockingbird instead of Harper Lee. I thought Mr. Bennett was hot, so I wanted to impress him with my Truman Capote knowledge. I ended up liking Truman far more than Mr. Bennett, yet I still agree with his theory on TKAM. Next time you see the movie Capote, keep this theory in mind as you watch Truman & Harper interact. The people who put this movie together definitely think Capote wrote TKAM too.

* One book that you’d want on a desert island: Survive on a Desert Island - Claire Llewellyn.

* One book that made you laugh: Are You there God? It’s Me, Margaret - Judy Blume. Yes, it was a long time ago. Maybe I need to read more funny books.

* One book that made you cry:
Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. I still have my copy I bought 16 years ago (and it looks like the one I linked).

* One book that you wish had been written: How to be a Preacher’s Kid and NOT develop a complex about the Church

* One book you wish had never been written:
The Harry Potter books…I say this not because I think they’re full of witchcraft & evil, but because my husband has bought them, and they cost so dang much. When we’re in Scotland, we’re actually going to visit the West Highland Line, which is the train station they used in the movies.

* One book you are currently reading: Cost of Discipleship - Deitrich Bonhoeffer. I’ve been reading this since 1999. It’s so intense it has seriously taken me that long.

* One book you’ve been meaning to read: Revolution - George Barna. I’ve had about 20 people say I need to read it…but I have a rule about reading books…if it’s a trendy book, I’ll wait until it’s untrendy to read it.

Now, in keeping with the rules of tagging, I am now supposed to tag people. But you all know me. I hate rules. So, instead of tagging five people - I tag YOU. Here’s the tradeoff - you don’t have to post it on your blog, but instead, I’d love to see your book list in my comments. That way, a little bit of cyberspace is saved and respected! I know I’m not as cool as Mark, so I don’t think I could legitimately tag anyone.

Happy Tuesday.

I am going to Scotland too — but not for business or mission, just a “holiday” with my mom. I’ll read back into your blog archives to find out more about when and why you are going. (BTW - I’m Jade’s MIL! ;)

    * One book that changed your life: Vision and the Vow - Peter Craig. It is on discipleship. Really impacted my walk.

    * One book that you’ve read more than once: Chronicles of Narnia - C.S. Lewis. How could you not read those more than once?

    * One book that you’d want on a desert island: The Bible - God. I hate to give a Sunday School answer, but it is true. I would want my Bible more than anything.

    * One book that made you laugh: HOw to Die - Doug Warren. Written by a friend. He’s a comical genious.

    * One book that made you cry: Redeeming Love - Francine Rivers. Admittedly, a girl book. My wife made me read it and I thank her for that.

    * One book that you wish had been written: Surviving Father for Dummies

    * One book you wish had never been written: Malleus Maleficarum - Heinrich Institoris. Used in the 15th Century to prosecute witches. Blatant legalism and misuse of the scriptures. Thousands died to it.

    * One book you are currently reading: Falling For God: Saying Yes to His Extravagent Proposal - Gary Moon. I LOVE this book. It is about falling in love with God and brings practical theology into perspective, challanging the reader through spiritual exercises.

    * One book you’ve been meaning to read: Call to Discipleship - Deitrich Bonhoeffer

    Nice.

I think I have reached to height of coolness to have been on Mark Waltz’s tag list with Flowerdust!

    let’s see…

one book that changed my life: soul tsunami by leonard sweet. changed my paradigm on ministry in a pretty big way…

one book i’ve read more than once: captivating by john and stasi eldredge. very good stuff. but i declared a personal moratorium on eldredge stuff after the 2nd read. :)

one book i’d want on a desert island: how to build an airplane from sticks and twigs and then fly it. :)

one book that made me laugh: the life you’ve always wanted. ortberg tells some quality stories.

one book that made me cry: captivating. (yes, i used that book twice. sue me. i get a lot out of books i read but don’t often get that emotionally drawn in.)

one book i wish had been written: 100 reasons why worship leaders make great girlfriends. preferably written by john eldredge or erwin mcmanus because all the cool guys would likely eat it right up. especially if the cover were schnazzy. :)

one book i wish had never been written: lord of the rings. not a happy summer reading experience… honorable mention–i kissed dating goodbye. need i say more? :)

one book i’m currently reading: what color is your parachute? yes, very exciting. :)

one book i’ve been meaning to read: ordering your private world by gordon macdonald. i started it a shamefully long time ago and never finished. ironically i did read enough to know there’s a chapter called ‘the tragedy of an unfinished book.’ :)

    happy tuesday to you, too!

    Anne -

You’re very kind. And, it was very kind of you to play along in a game you’re not too crazy about. I love the bend of the rules you made in the tagging process.

I probably don’t want to be all that honest about the number of books I read 2/3 of the way through and considered it “read”!

I posted mine on my xanga because I loved the idea so much!! You’ll have to hop over there and read them for yourself… And I completely thing that Harper Lee wrote TKAM… What if she wrote In Cold Blood, huh? She was with Capote the whole time he was investigating…. That might account for similarities in the writing styles! Think about it!

I don’t have time right now to post my favorites books, but I did purchase Cost of Discipleship, by Deitrich Bonhoeffer, after reading this post. One of my friends mentions his name a lot and after seeing that you have been reading the book for so many years, I decided to give it a look-see.
Since purchasing the book, and not even reading a work of it yet, save for the back, I have been told that it is second only to the New Testament. Now, thats saying something.
Happy Reading and enjoy your trip.
    Greg.

One book that changed your life: Celebration of Discipline. This book is packed full of insight and wisdom, yet is beautifully practical.
One book that you’ve read more than once: half of Les Miserables. I’ve started that book twice and then I get burnt out half way through. Someday, it will happen. I will read it.
One book that you’d want on a desert island: How to Win Friends and Influence People. J/K. I don’t know about that one.
One book that made you laugh: I can’t think of one, I guess I need to read more genres.
One book that made you cry: A Child Called It. This story is very sad.
One book that you wish had been written: How to NOT Be An Idiot in High-school.
One book that you wish had never been written: Left Behind Series…except for book one. The rest of them could have been summed up in a couple of sentences. (in my opinion)
One book you are currently reading: Everyday Apocalypse by David Dark - The Sacred Revealed in Radiohead, the Simpsons, and other Pop Culture Icons.
One book you’ve been meaning to read: Velvet Elves & Blue Like Jazz
