the runs
November 5th, 2006 @ 7:33 pm
No, not those kinds of runs. The good kind. I am not a trendy person, but it seems like more and more people I know in real life or virtually are running these days. Danielle is a girl whose blog I’ve been reading for a while, as she has been training for a marathon, our teaching pastor Wes is running his first marathon soon, today was the NY marathon. I’m feeling a little inspired to start running.
In middle & high school, I was actually really athletic. I outran all of the guys in my middle school (there was one other girl who was faster than me), and I played basketball, ran track, played tennis. Now almost 10 years out of high school, my muscles have given in to the real world, and it’s my own fault for not making effort in keeping them up.
I’m still not quite ready to hit the gym hard. My incisions are still sore (the muscle & tissue that was cut through) and my surgeon said that would be the case for a month or so. I figure I’ll take another down week and maybe start jogging a little bit next week. I think I’ll train to do something small first, like a 5 or 10K fun run for charity. But any tips any of you have for getting my formerly athletic butt off the couch and back into my sweet pink and grey New Balances would be appreciated!

You know, I want to run a 5K. Maybe we can find one to run together.
It would certainly give me a bit of accountability to make sure that I actually follow-through with my intention to run one.

ahhh the joys of running. Of course 90% of american men honestly believe that running is a form of torcher employed by high school coaches for dropping passes, showing up late for practice, or doing something wrong in the classroom. And those 90% of american men now spend their time (me included) on the couch or behind a computer.
Tip:
not sure if it’s a tip but it was a slap in the face for me and motivated me… I was 100% jock in high school… captain of football and baseball. I could run for days. I was made of SOLID STEEL!!! (let me pretend). Now adays I really don’t appear to be all that athletic. not in the worst shape but most would consider me to be a high school standout by any means. It somewhat of an image that i always had of myself.
Last year I realized… i was only in GREAT shape for 5 years…. and that was…..10+ years ago?? I always thought i could jump right back into shape whenever i wanted but I had to face the facts. If I want it i have to work hard at it and I will be of more value to me in the end.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE running. Sadly, I have a back/hip issue that keeps me restricted to only occasionally doing a few miles, but I’ve done 1 marathon and 6+ half-marathons.
Recently, some of my friends took up running and they followed a Couch-to-5K plan that they all really loved. I’m sure you can find it online somewhere.

I hate running. I don’t believe in self mutilation. However, I am really loving the lay out.

i love that the first thing that came to mind when you said runs was the dreaded panty hose type. (That’s been a battle for my bright yellow tights…)

Woah. Your blog’s different.
I’d be interested to hear how things go with running for you. I’m in the mddle of training for my third marathon. A buddy of mine and I have been running the Disney World marathon in Orlando together for that past three years. We start training in the summer and run the race in January. It’s been fun.

Running. I do it when I make it happen. And after I make it happen a few weeks in a row, I start to enjoy it. But it’s not happened in a while, so I’m not looking forward to the period of non-enjoyment. But I keep seeing the covers of magazines “the body you want by New Year’s Day” and such. As I’m a few years past my 10 year reunion now, my body is really starting to inch (or centimeter if I think positively) towards the “before” pictures in those ads.
