weekend thought…christmahanakwanzakuh

i don’t know about you, but i have one of “those people” in my life that will forward me every email ever published by the american family association. you know the ones that say walmart is giving away 5% of it’s online profits to a homosexual organization, that ford supports gay marriage, the ones that scream “boycott…if you’re really a christian who cares about america, you will boycott!!!” and now the latest…did you know best buy is using “holiday” instead of “christmas” in their advertising?!

best buy states their reasoning is their advertising is for many holidays from thanksgiving through new years. duh. kind of makes sense to me. and i’m sorry if you are one of these afa activists and this is offending you. but since when do christians have the right to demand america’s allegiance to celebrating christmas - and christmas alone?

last time i looked, america had some little law or something that said people have the liberty to choose their own religion and to practice it without persecution. ironically, that is one of the reasons why we hopped on a boat and sailed over - because a religious agenda was being forced on our ancestors. so, maybe i’m just one of those crazy liberal women, diguised in an elephant’s costume with a bible under my trunk…but by shouting how all these other “holidays” are “wrong” and now we’re going to boycott anyone who doesn’t use the world “christmas” in their advertising…YOU are the one doing the persecuting. you are the one forcing your agenda on others in a country that clearly states everyone has the right to celebrate in the context of their personal religion. ironic, isn’t it? our history is of us escaping the very thing we ourselves our guilty of doing…taking pride in our beliefs and pushing them on society.

i apologize for the recent political undertone my posts have been taking. hopefully i’ll snap out of it soon.

oh. and happy holidays.

Great thought. The thing is Christmas is celebrated by a lot of people here in the U.S. Just because we celebrate Christmas doesn’t mean we celebrate the real reason behind it. What does it matter if Best Buy is saying Christmas or not. It is just a word to some anyway. So, do we boycott everything that has to do with commercialization? No, we keep shining the light to everyone around us so people will know the real reason behind Christmas.

I think the elections are still in the back of your mind! Can I see you in the elephant costume some time? Now to my opinion: I think showing the Christ of Christmas in our lives (the light of the world is Jesus) is so much more important than telling everybody where to shop or in this case, where not to shop. I still won’t buy anything by Liz Claiborne because she supports the Church of Satan (Oprah Winfrey show). That’s just a personal conviction. And finally: Mele Kalikimaka!

    Anne, I concur.

Walmart caved and has gone back to ‘christmas’ instead of ‘holidays’ - business decision based on their target market. I’m sure their are a lot of happy midwesterners now.

Think of the throngs of people who won’t choose to follow Him because Best Buy said ‘holiday’ instead of ‘christmas’.

    Bah humbug.

    Mom,

The Liz Claiborne Church of Satan story is an urban legend. There is no validity to the story. See the link below.

Even the Oprah Show won’t confirm the validity of that rumor…

I had a peppermint mocha yesterday to celebrate the season and the 40 degree weather and thought of you. I’m so excited about this year! I’m with you on the advertising, sometimes people need to just calm down.

i agree. i think people get all worked up about the wrong things. what about the millions of orphans world wide, the street kids in america, the hurting people who won’t have enought money to buy food this christmas, much less go to best buy and buy presents. where are the christians championing THAT cause?
and, all this talk about christmas makes me sad for poor, neglected thanksgiving.

You know what I say? Everyone that “Boycots” has to do something for a poor person this “Holiday” season, you know act like Jesus (the reason for the season) and I won’t have so much of a problem with the “call” by Christian’s to boycot what ever. I just wonder what looks more like Jesus to the lost world, boycots or feeding the hungry?

Well said. I read AFA to know what’s going on and appreciate their trying to get people involved…I have a nack at assuming that everything’s okay, so it forces me to keep thing. Sometimes I agree with AFA, sometimes I don’t. I didn’t agree with their take on the Veggie Tales issue…Veggie Tales was handling it admirably and using the opportunity they were give…doing well on Saturday morning, even without the overt Christian message there. The undercurrent is strong. I’d rather have my kids watch that then a “strong undercurrent” of mysticism or whatever that stuff is.

Our money should support our convictions…one area I try to keep tabs on. Does anybody know if the thing about WalMart is actually true? Seemed unlikely to me in light of the hot water they seemed to already be in…many hear are re-thinking the power and monopoly type support we’re giving Wal*Mart. They’ve forced small businesses out here. So…they have a lot of power to speak for us with our money. We do have to “vote” in my opinion.

I totally agree with the take on the holidays issue. I don’t believe we should be any sadder about public town square nativities removed than we’d be if some other religions wanted a presentation put up. Yes, we are described as a “Christian nations”, but at times, our principles have to take precendence over our preferences.

    Well said!

sounds like you are a California libertarian and would fit right in where I live

anyway, good points…remember last year when there was a scandal for churches canceling Christmas morning services–mainly because the night before had services…duh?
