talking to the big guy upstairs
Posted on February 21st, 2007 @ 11:08 am

if you wouldn’t mind, say a wee prayer for yours truly. tonight is the night…the night i speak at the net, our high school program, on one of our campuses (the mesquite campus, across from the town east mall if any of you dfw people want to drop by - next to target!)  anyway, the party begins at 7 pm, and i’ll probably be doing my part of the talk around 7:30-7:45.  after me, the student pastor is going to talk for 15 minutes, and then we’re going to do a Q&A.

the whole night is about sex and porn so please pray that god will have our hearts and minds completely and use us to speak whatever truth he wants them to hear tonight.  also, for the kids…after it’s all over we are going to be hanging out to talk to anyone who wants to meet individually, so that they will have courage to approach us, and that we’ll be able to help them…

tension

for a rope to have tension,
two forces must be pulling
as fiercely as possible
in opposite directions

yet called out
trying to balance
and understand
unity
freedom
humility
kingdom

weekend thought…it’s my birthday, when’s yours?
Posted on February 16th, 2007 @ 1:11 pm

i turn 27 on monday.  if you’re new here, read my last birthday post to catch up.

a friend turned me on to a new band.  and consequently, i found this song.  which i officially and hereby dub the song of my twenty-seventh year.

There are songs to be sung,
And pages to be filled with memories.
There are roads to be traveled in places I have never seen.
There are postcards to send,
And so much beauty just to take in.
There are dreams to be chased,
And friends to be held more dearly.
There is love to be seen more clearly.
There are fears to be faced,
And tremblings to understand.
There are new days to brave,
And all this foolish pride
To lay down in your hands.

[ode to new grass - the gloria record]

i am taking monday off work, spending the first part of the day at a spa getting massaged, facialed [extracted, if necessary], manicured, pedicured and the last part of the day with twenty-five-ish of some of my dearest friends (and newest friends) at a dinner & movie screening of the new Jim Carrey film, 23.

Fun will be had.  Photos will be taken.

When’s your birthday?

smoke and illumination [a valentine's day memoir]
Posted on February 15th, 2007 @ 11:21 am

no linen napkins. no salad forks.
[crinkle of cereal bags]
the air is cold. hot tea.
[i stayed in the car, thank you]
wrong turn on main street.
[never listen to your wife's directions]
parking. walking. windy. stamp on right hand.
[should have left my coat in the car]
walking. again. windy.
[jaywalker]
illumination through the cigarette smoke
[holding your hand tight. drunken lovers quarrel]
don’t spend your whole life, waiting for your whole life

sleep in heavenly peace
Posted on February 14th, 2007 @ 11:10 am

does anyone out there have problems sleeping? i have tried most of the typical expensive “sleep aids” and they do nothing for me, so i am currently on an anti-seizure medicine that is off labeled for insomnia. it helps me fall asleep but evidently it’s not a very deep sleep, as i wake up every hour or so when the train outside goes by. so, except for maybe one night this month, i have not been able to sleep through the night. if i increase the dosage, it just makes me feel drunk the next day but doesn’t help me stay asleep any better.

besides drugging myself into a coma, does anyone have any advice? i do breathing exercises and the whole “head-to-toe” relaxation, but like i said, the problem isn’t going to sleep - it is staying there.
