hellooooo……naked lady
January 10th, 2008 @ 5:02 am

last night i was reading intensely about the life of david. how the bible says so many times that others knew god was with david, or how david himself would claim god’s power over a situation. god was so faithful to him, and then made one of the most well known and important covenants in the history of mankind.

later on, as we all know, david screwed up pretty big. he was a successful king. he was a successful warrior. kicking other nations square in the pants. during one particular spring time, when most kings went to war, he stayed back in jerusalem. he was hanging out on the roof and saw bathsheba.

hellooooo……naked lady.

i’m sure the memories of god’s faithfulness of times past flew out the window. or off the roof, as the case may be.

we all know what happened. as the deadly vipers call it, boom chicka wah wah.

bathsheba must have been beautiful. stunning in david’s eyes.

and that one beautiful distraction contributed to many, many more terrible mistakes from david. lying…murder…

beautiful distractions are all around us. and not just in naked-lady form (although there’s plenty of that). power. pride. attention. obsession. status. facebook. television. the perfect suburban life. getting marred. the internet. becoming single.

they may look good. feel good. some of them may not even hurt us immediately.

but they distract.

from what’s best.

what’s your beautiful distraction?

[aside: the original title for this post was simply "beautiful distractions." however, upon learning of the content of this post, my husband suggested my title should be "hellooooo......naked lady." i figure that would be a smart move for the googlebots, so i obliged.]

Right now my beautiful distractions is getting married. I don’t think that it will solve anything or anything really, but planning my wedding has kept my mind focused on other things, rather than god. And I know that I can choose to not let it distract me in my relationship with GodN but I also choose the other way too. It is almost my I am bored so I will plan….when I could pray or spend time seeking the Lord.

But normally my distraction is the internet and getting lost in linking and spend hours of wasted time doing nothing producrtive.

    Ps - great post.

The Internet is so distracting. I Spend the morning Facebooking, emailing, blogging and then feel empty because the kids are up and I missed the quiet time with God that both Him and I need. I own that. I need to do something different but the daily it is a battle and daily I lose.

I get caught in the “sparkles” of everyday life instead of embracing the Light of the day.

Besides my buddy’s moobs, I get distracted by the internet. But, that’s one of my new year’s thingy-ba-moobs . . . less non-productive browsing.

    great post, anne!

the distraction for me often comes in the form of desiring more “me” time than i need. i’ll get too protective of how “my” day off should look. now, i am all for sabbath and other types of rest. what i am talking about is a mindset that would suggest it is the last day off ever i’ll get to have.

yup, comes down to getting outside myself and making myself fully open to how He would have me be other-focused. :)

    I love the title!!!

My distraction is allowing life to crowd out getting a daily feasting of the Word.

the internet is my distraction. i try to justify it though by getting devotionals sent to my email, but even they become a distraction. maybe i should get off here and just go hang out with God for a while…

Hey Anne. Great post and very relevant. I’m convinced that Satan’s number one tactic is using distractions to keep ones focus off of Jesus. If he can get us to glance away, he will snare us. Christ followers must always keep their eyes fixed on Jesus. As long as we are distracted, we will not be continuing Jesus’ ministry and making a difference in our day.

(Hebrews 12:2 NIV) “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

    Know that you are loved,

My distraction is what other people think. I let that get in the way of what God thinks WAY too much.

i’m a little (lot) obsessive (neurotic) over good titles… LOVE (heart) the title. my distraction (besides boom chicka wah wah - thank you for that, btw)is blogging and reading blogs. sometimes there can be too much of a good thing (except the boom chicka wah wah, of course).

    great post.

glad to hear you’re getting settled. congrats on the new move and new job. make it great!!!

My…Beautiful distraction…has always been and will always be “the flesh” I am covered in…ALWAYS getting in the way of the spirit in me. Doughnuts…sleep…feelings…hormones…bling bling…me, me ,me…etc

I agree with Jenn…I am my own beautiful distraction…only thing is that I’m not really that beautiful.

Mine is materialism. Beauty products. Handbags. Shoes. Nordstrom. I go there way too much and I need to be saving, especially now since I am pregnant. It’s a struggle to get all those “wants” out of my head sometimes.

I think education and knowledge can be a distraction at times for me. Sometimes that occupies my time more than getting into the word — and don’t forget the small, little talking box — the TV :)!

Well, I would have to agree with the others…the internet is my distraction…it almost like it just calls to me.

What a great post. thank you for this reminder… God is really removing a lot of distractions from my life right now… why? Because He’s uniquely setting me up for what it is He’s calling me to do… it’s a good thing, but a struggle sometimes, because I can get distracted by little shiny things pretty easily!

TV was a big distraction for me, but now that a lot of the shows are gone due to the strike, i think the internet is starting to take up that time. Yikes.

Honestly, I think my distraction is ME. :) I often get in the way of God. Wish that wasn’t such a huge deal but probably the biggest issue ever! :)

maybe my dislike for staying still would be my distraction.

I think the biggest beautiful distraction in my life is DOING ministry, as you have talked about in your last few blogs. I have found in my life it is easy to focus on doing ministry at the sake of my own relationship with Christ.

Wow…I really like that term, “beautiful distractions” (although the naked lady title did pique my curiosity). There are so many beautiful distractions in life, aren’t there?

Keep up the great posts. My wife and I both love your blog.

    I LOVE this post. :)

Currently my biggest distraction is the gym. It definitely eats into my time with God. But I’d have to second Jess’ comment that what other people think of me is a close second.

Have an amazing time in Uganda!
