now this is what i call simple
June 25th, 2008 @ 10:33 pm

chris and i just finished packing. not counting furniture or other random things (which, don’t get me wrong, there is plenty of)…we only have 38 boxes of stuff to move!

that is it! i think the movers are going to laugh at us.

i remember after our second year of marriage we filled up a 24′ truck and packed our cars to the brim as we moved out of a 1400 square foot townhome. we had SOOO much stuff. and that was after we threw and gave a lot of it away.

now, i hate to brag, but 38 medium sized boxes? including our clothes, food, appliances…everything?

that is not too shabby.

the movers come tomorrow at 10 am, but we don’t leave until friday at 10 am. we’ll spend the day cleaning and…who knows? no TV, computer…nothing. fun times! i probably won’t be back online until saturday…thanks for being patient in my absence!

oklahoma city, thanks. it’s been a fun six months.

nashville, here we come!

what was your worst moving nightmare?

Well I’ve never moved before, but I am this Sunday. Making my way out to Colorado Springs via Cornerstone Festival and a friends house in MO. I hope I don’t encounter any nightmares or problems as it will be just me and my Corolla with about 10 boxes, if that, of all my stuff. Praying for you guys and my safe travels. Blessings on you in this transition.

I’m making my move to OKC in 2 weeks to start my new job at LC.tv. I’ve not moved before (well on my own) but when my family moved to Tulsa from Ohio, our Uhaul broke down in Indiana and we didn’t get it to Tulsa for almost a week after we left.

I’m kind of sad I wasn’t able to meet you and your husband. You all seem like amazing peoples. I did see you in your office last week though working away when Brad was giving my parents a tour.

Hope you have a safe trip to Nashville!

7 years ago, we moved ourselves across town. Most of our furniture was junk, but we did have a few antique pieces. (I like buying antique furniture because it lasts forever, never goes out of style, and can sometimes increase in value…better use of money than modern particle-board stuff).

The nicest piece we owned was a Chippendale chest o’ drawers.

Guess which one fell off the truck. Yep. And guess who loaded that particular item.

Then we almost got run over by a guy in a goat truck as we loaded it back on.

In a testament to old school furniture building, it survived. We got it fixed up and it’s actually better than before!

The past move we made back to Tucson, AZ from Kansas, (3 weeks ago), would fall under the category of worse move. 38 boxes? Try 238! We had so much stuff our stuff even had it’s own stuff it insisted we bring! So much we had to get an additional pod, (they are like 8×8x16. And there are only 3 of us in our family! It took a week to pack and load all the stuff and that was with help. Now in AZ we are still trying to unpack and get everything in some Like you Anne, we sold and gave away lots of things too. I feel like we are in sin because we have so much!! Ughhh!

My worst moving nightmare unfortunately is re-occuring. It happens when you show up to help someone from church move and realize they haven’t started packing yet and you end up doing that as well.

    Good for you for pre-packing.

Our worst moving nightmare? Moving to France and having movers steal 2 computers(and various other things), and lose the bedrails to my daughter’s antique bed. ugh…

    38 boxes? Not bad sis.
Have a safe trip to Nashville.

Contacted a few college students in that area. Don’t be surprised if they email you to lend a hand once you get there.

Congrats on the 38 boxes. I think I filled 38 boxes from my kitchen alone.

Hm, I dont think I have any particular nightmares though things always seem to go askew.

When I helped my friend move last summer, she didn’t have everything packed and she hadnt really secured any vehicles to move the stuff. Thankfully she found some friends with cars (considering I live in a “walking city”) that were willing to lend a hand…

Then I moved a couple months after her. My issue was that my hallway is extremly narrow and my bed didn’t want to make it out the door. And when we had about half the stuff loaded into the cars it started raining which soon turned into a downpour…

Once my husband and I moved from Virginia to California….my husband accept a call to be Youth Pastor and honestly I didn’t really want to go….one of the 26 boxes literally fell on my head…..God got my attention for sure…but once we got to California, the teens were so fabulous, we never thought about the bad stuff! I’m glad you are not pulling a U-haul….the curves and hills are super bad! New Church work, new scenery, new people, new place to live…those people will love you guys because you have such warmth, family-oriented, cordial, and hospitable kindness. I love new starts, newness - a great way to live! May you both be blessed!

my worst moving nightmare was when my husband (fiance at the time) and i were moving our stuff into our new apartment. He filled a 24ft truck mostly by himself and left 2.5 feet of it for me.

it was mid january, we were in the middle of a 21 day fast. it was snowing. and it was very unorganized.

    worst move ever.

worst moving nightmare…? i would have to say helping out a friend’s mother move…she had a BIG “firesafe” gun safe that her husband owned…four of us had it on a two-wheel cart and had to go up one step…it went up and kept going on top of the guy running the cart…fortunately the three of us helping out were able to get it up rather quickly, but it was not pretty…

Aside from moving out of dorm rooms (which was never pretty because I’m um, not organized, and it was a giant mess what with it being the end of semester and all), I haven’t moved since I was 6 (now 24)!

I have a feeling (and a dream) that I will be moving out within the next 6 months to a year, and so I am going to spend my upcoming vacation going through 18 years worth of stuff, and getting down to simplicity. I also have an insane library (I heart free books, and books on clearance, etc.), and they are all in random piles and boxes. Looking forward to organizing them, so that they can find a home in bookcases soon (but after I move).

Have fun with the move! Welcome to this side of the country!

I would have to whole heartedly agree with Jason’s previous statement. There is nothing like volunteering to help someone “load the truck” only to arrive and realize everthing is still in ths same state it was at the farewell party the week before.

My family had a National Lampoon-esque move last June. The power company got the date wrong and cut off our power THREE times before we left the old house. (Did I mention it was June? With no AC?) The cable company did the same thing twice with our cable and internet, and since both my parents work from home, that simply doesn’t work for us.

Then there were the two times I had to move dorms, totally alone. I hated that.

My wife and I’s first move from Deerfield, IL to Miami, FL. It took us four days. She got sick along the way, and our car almost came off of the trailer.

Then we get there to find the parsonage we were promised still had people living in it. That was my first youth pastorate (part-time) and the housing was our only compensation.

    Oh yes, good times.

All moves are insane for us… but the craziest was when my husband accepted a new job out of the blue, and we moved from PA to NC within a few weeks with our 5 year old, and twin girls only 2 months old. We had to stay in temp housing for a month. Aaarrggh… my eye is twitching just remembering it. :)

    end of college:

my good friend, who uses a wheelchair, needed help moving out of her dorm room (of FOUR YEARS… she only moved out the summer after freshman year) into the house we were renting. it’s the night before graduation, and we have to be at hinkle fieldhouse in our gowns at 9 am. i thought we were moving her out on saturday, after graduation … turns out she needed to move everything out on friday night. but i didn’t find out until 10 pm.

so i head over to her dorm, where it becomes apparent that she hasn’t even packed yet, except for one lonely box. and she has a lot (A LOT) of stuff.

i made a few phone calls. one other girl came over to help pack boxes, and at midnight 3 guys came over to start loading boxes and furniture into my car and take it to the new house.

we all made it to bed around 4 am, miraculously. and we all made it to graduation, which is probably the bigger miracle :)

Laura and I have been out of the loop since moving to Nashville late last year from Arizona. We did it with 40 boxes and that included baby stuff! Nashville is a blast - you’ll love it here!

Congratulations on moving. If you ever need help with anything shoot us an e-mail. We live north of town but we’re always around.

Packing me & 2 roommates out of a 2000 sq ft house and storing each of our things in separate homes until our new place was available 2 weeks later. Repacking the trucks and unpacking into our new rental. Then 6 months later packing up to move my stuff again when I got married. We moved on the hottest day in summer 103F and the coldest day in winter -20F. Good times.

Anne, good luck with the move. Nashville is, in my opinion, the best place in the world to eat. I haven’t been around in a while, but here are my must try places for you:

    Calypso Cafe
    The Iguana
    Pancake House (the village)
Valentino’s (in West End for something fancy)
Blue Bird Cafe (who cares about the food, just listen)
Sir Pizza (the best delivery pizza ever dreamed of cut in square pieces of course)
Anything on Second (except, Wildhorse, Hard Rock, Planet, Hooters, etc.)

I hope you enjoy your time there.

We just moved in March. It was a pain in the butt to say the least. Too many boxes. Too many trips. Too much, too much, too much. I am dying to have a garage sale. We need to unload. I mean it is serioulsy getting ridiculous. The amount of toys alone is almost shameful.

I’m moving for the 1st time since college–20 yrs in an almost 2000sq ft home to a 900sq ft apt. I’m moving as part of the leadership of a church plant and am selling/giving/trashing just about everything! I haven’t counted, but 38 boxes might be close. Simple is awesome!!

Not a nightmare, but I do remember just after we got married 11 years ago and our move from Dallas to NC. We stopped over one night to rest in a hotel and we looked out the window of our room at our UHaul truck with a trailer and car and his truck loaded up with stuff and thought, “That’s everything we own - right there in the hotel parking lot.” It wasn’t much, but it was ours and the beginning of a very blessed life so far.

I think our move now would be a lot more than that which is why I hope we never have to move! 11 years, a house, business and 2 kids makes for a lot more stuff! Simple is good. Good for you guys keeping it that way.

My worst moving nightmare pales in comparison to some. I was moving into a ground floor apartment, in what I later found out was a not-so-nice area of town. Apparently, their idea of “clean” and mine were totatlly different: When I plopped the first box down on the floor plumes of dust a dirt clouded the air. The kitchen looked like a greese pit with splatterings all over the walls. And, the cherry on top, was that there was FOOD in the kitcen cabinets. I was fuming. I piled up all of the food and tossed it at the front door of the management office, who apparently took 3 hour lunches.

When I had a 5 month old and a 3 year old, we were told the base we were living on was closing. My husband got on a telephone with another Navy guy, who gave him three choices of places to move and 2 hours to pick which one. We chose San Diego, and left a week before Christmas. We celebrated Christmas early, and were on the road Christmas week. We each drove one of our cars, with CB’s to talk back and forth. It was CRAZY. The best part was leaving snowy Michigan and arriving in San Diego to mid-70’s temperatures!!

When we were moving to SA, we sold and gave away everything but 8 totes (those plastic box thingies with pictures, letters and journals) and so on our drive to Kansas City from Wichita [where we were storing that stuff] one fell off the back of the truck and we didn’t find out until we got there. Yup, it is gone forever. I still haven’t figured out what we have lost, but obviously God was sifting out more of our lives and stuff from us. It still totally sucked though.

My worst moving nightmare? How about 5 months ago, when I moved from England back to North Carolina to start a new job, thinking it would take about six weeks for my husband’s VISA to come through so he could join me. 4 months - FOUR MONTHS - later, he finally got here. It sucked…big time.

Praise the Lord, he’s finally here!

Moving overseas was our worst. We had to seperate everything into two piles. Things to crate {which we may never see again} and things to put into suitcases. The problem….we had to do this 4 months before we moved and 3 months before Christmas. And every item that was crated had to be inventoried with estimated replacement costs. It took nearly 3 weeks to go through the process. Then we didn’t get the crate until we had been in our new house for nearly 5 months. What a nightmare!
