the A-list [disclaimer: cynicism ahead]
September 29th, 2008 @ 5:57 pm

i was reading something today about the “a list” christians…you know, the really really famous ones.

i sent it to my husband who said, “there’s an ‘a list?’”

why, of course, silly husband.

don’t you know that jesus loves some christians more than others?

I was just trying to think who is on the A-List if we have such a thing. Is it like Hollywood? Do our people remain on the A-List once they’ve died? Is our list tied at all to the other A-List we’re more familiar with? There are quite a few Christians who happen to be celebrities like Chuck Norris, Vincent Furnier (Alice Cooper) and so on. Or is it like the ultimo-Christian A-List - Billy Graham, Rob Bell, Toby Mac . . . ?

I’d imagine that any Christian A-list would be primarily filled with famous pastors a la Joel Osteen, Rick Warren, etc.

Isn’t Christian A-list kind of an oxymoron? I mean, if we’re truly taking on the character of Christ, would we even have it?

    Hmm…

That was a little more serious than I originally intended. On a lighter note, now I’m going to listen to “Love Shack” by the B-52’s.

An A-list. How petty. That would be just like us to create another list that divides the people who matter from the people who don’t. Sounds like another opportunity for someone to flaunt their spiritual superiority.

Hey, was I on it by any chance? :)

sounds like a christian knock-off… another way to copying the world. i am looking forward to the day when Christ-like culture sets the bar and the world copies. maybe thats too cynical?

Who gets to be Face? Geez, that puts us right back to the A-list again, doesn’t it?

Wait a minute…you mean we’re not supposed to try and make our Christian brothers and sisters feel worse about themselves while making ourselves look better?

Silly rabbit…building each other up is only for the idealists.

***shakes head and sighs with the realization that it’s lists like this “a-list” that represent everything wrong with the church today***

Don’t you think the disciples were “a-listers”? I mean come on, we know some hated them, but others knew them as leaders, as people that were great at what they did.

…its ok to have the “A-lister” category, but what the church does is start the idolization process….thats the un-christian part about it.

I think there is a lot of truth in our own minds to the “A” list thing. We categorize Christians the way we would celebreties.

I have personally never been on the “A” list, but have rubbed shoulders with a few who have been/are. The funny thing about most of them I have met is that NONE of them would consider themselves that way. A lot of the reason they got to where they are is because of their servant leadership and desire for God to get the glory, not them. I think that’s why they get a lot of the attention they get, because their lives are unusual, or even extraordinary.

I have been with those who are on the “B” list or “C” list, striving to be on the “A” list, and that is not a pretty site…at all. I think those are the people who have made me feel like I’m a loser more than any group of people.

Sorry for the length of my comment…I’ve got a lot of energy on this issue.
    :)

I pray that I am always on the “d” list. Or how about “q”. Better yet, the “s” list. “S” stands for sinner. Keep up the great work Anne. Love your blog!

If you’re buying every book that Author X puts out; if you download that gospel singer the day it’s available; if your decision to attend a conference or church because of who’s speaking–isn’t that an A-list

Anne: Since my husband is a Pastor, I can honestly say I’ve seen people who don’t treat the visitors or guest welcome because they might knock their own self off the “A” list. It’s pathetic!

Oh, this makes me have the Mad Church Disease from whence I fight that dreadful disease!!!! I don’t know how to order or line, so I will be first person in line at Mardel on Feb. 1, 2009 when your everloving book comes out.

I love that open apologies site……we need more apologies and humbleness!!!! Yes!!

To go along with this idea of A-listers, I also think it’s weird that there’s a Christian “elite” - the millionaires that all of the big non-profits and parachurch organizations treat REALLY nicely so they give them lots of money. Maybe I see more of this because I live in New York. I’m not making any judgement calls here, I’m just saying that it’s weird.

This makes me think about “TV Guide Channel’s Emmy Coverage”…Are we really so into ourselves that we want to put out a red carpet and re-hash our award status so everyone can know how great we are, or will we decrease, so He can increase (John 3:30)…we must realize that to a lost and dying world, we are the only Jesus some will ever see!

Thanks for stirring our minds to think, Anne!

On a positive, non-sarcastic note there are a lot of leaders (humble, genuine, Jesus-following leaders) we should strive to learn from, and voila, the A-list has just identified them for us!

The A Listers are those who say:

Bless God my family is healthy (but what about that ultra Godly family who just buried their child last year?

Praise the Lord my finances are in great shape & I have a wonderful house (what about that family that has 4 kids and make under $35K per year and Struggle)

Praise God that my kids are good (what about those kids who are always in trouble)

PTL for my beautiful wife/husband kids. ( what about that wife who has had over 10 surgeries and is now “deformed” in the eyes of the world??

Does God not love those who have been rained on by a crap shower? Yes - so is it a TRUE blessing just because someone else’s life is without some type of pain or problem????

I don’t know but I do know that at some point in a life you will get crapped on & it’s those times you need to be able to say Praise God…”
